This May is Healthy Vision Month! At Valley Eyecare Center, our optometrists recommend a few tips to make sure that your eyes stay as healthy as they can throughout the summer.
Optometrists Promote Healthy Vision
Get a comprehensive eye exam—Make sure that your prescription is up to date, and make sure that your eyes are as healthy as they can be! An optometrist can not only check your vision but also dilate your pupils to check for any signs of damage or disease. If glaucoma or other vision diseases run in your family, it is a good idea to get your eyes checked at least once a year.
Eat well—Your diet influences many aspects of your health, especially your vision! We all associate carrots with good vision because of the beta carotene that they contain, but did you know that other foods can also promote good vision? Make sure to eat plenty of spinach and leafy greens, as well as salmon and halibut, as they contain omega-3 fatty acids, which promote vision.
Wear sunglasses—It’s getting to be summertime, and the sun’s rays are most intense during the hot months. Protecting your eyes from the damaging rays of the sun is crucial to your eye health. Optometrists recommend wearing sunglasses every time you are outside so that you receive the full benefit of your shades!
Take a break from screens—While many of us may work in front of a screen and then come home to more screens, it is important to look away every once in a while from the blue light of a phone, television, or computer screen. We recommend the 20-20-20 rule. For every 20 minutes you spend focusing on a screen, focus on something that is 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This simple trick will help to save your eyes from eye strain!
