Always keep eye safety in mind when you’re on the job!eye-safety-at-work

Nearly every type of workplace has something in it that could be a threat to your vision. An estimated 2,000 people per day in America experience job-related eye injuries. Know the threats to your eyesight, and take smart steps to avoid injuries that could last for the rest of your life.

Maintaining Eye Safety At Work

1 – Follow all your workplace’s safety procedures

Any responsible workplace, no matter the type, will have posted safety procedures – including how to protect your eyes from any threats. Know those procedures and always follow them! You’ll protect your eyes, and you’ll also legally protect yourself if you get injured on the job.

2 – Protect your eyes from dust and debris

If you work in a job that involves particles, dust, or debris in the air – anything from wood shavings to flour dust – then it’s vitally important to always wear safety goggles. Even tiny debris can scratch your cornea, damaging your vision. In worst case situations, a flying object could even puncture your eye.

3 – Know any chemicals in use

What chemicals are in use at your office, and how are they stored? Many would be directly damaging to your eyesight, if they get into your eyes. Be aware of the chemicals in your environment.

If you work someplace where dangerous chemicals are frequently used, be sure you also know the location of any nearby water sources. If something harmful gets in your eyes, you need to flush it out ASAP.

4 – Don’t overdo screen time

Even if you simply stare at a computer all day for your job, too much screen time can impact your eyes. Excessive screen time has been linked to rising cases myopia. (nearsightedness), and can also cause eye-strain headaches. Follow the 20/20/20 rule to be safe: Every 20 minutes, spend at least 20 seconds looking at something 20+ feet away. This rests your eyes after long sessions at a screen.

5 – Wash your hands!

It’s extremely easy for germs to go from a desk, to your hands, to your eyes the next time you rub them. Wash and sanitize your hands frequently, to reduce the chances of infection in crowded workplaces.

Of course, you also need annual checkups to protect your eyesight and guard against progressive eye diseases. If it’s been more than a year, contact Valley Eyecare Center in Phoenix for an appointment!
