Optometry articles typically focus on eye and vision disorders, but often overlook one very important issue: eyelid disorders. Your eyelids are vital for protecting your eyes, and eyelid diseases can easily cause vision problems as well.
While less frequent than problems with the eyes themselves, it’s a good idea to be aware of common eyelid disorders as well. If you experience any of the following problems, be sure to schedule an appointment with a qualified Phoenix eye doctor!
Six Common Eyelid Disorders
1 – Blepharitis
Probably the most common of eyelid problems, blepharitis is an inflammation along the rim of the eyelid. This is most frequently caused by an infection, and will lead to itching and burning, along with the feeling of a foreign object in your eye. Prescribed topical antibiotics will typically clear it up.
2 – Styes
Another common issue, styes are small lumps which form due to an infected gland or eyelash follicle. These will typically go aware on their own after a few days, although medicine may be prescribed for more long-lasting styes.
3 – Chalazon
A chalazon is also a lump, but one caused by a blocked oil duct rather than infection. Aside from being irritating, it can also cause dry eye. Fortunately, they’re easy to handle. A warm compress periodically applied to the eyelid will speed up the process of unclogging the duct.
4 – Trichiasis
Trichiasis is a condition where one or more eyelashes grow in “upside down,” pointing the wrong way, and making contact with the eye’s cornea. Aside from being extremely irritating, they can potentially scratch the cornea, causing damage. Typically, simply plucking the eyelash(es) will fix the issue. If an eyelash continually regrows the wrong way, it may need to be surgically removed.
5 – Ptosis
Typically resulting from previous injury or muscular nerve damage, ptosis is a droopy eyelid which partially or totally covers the eye. This typically can only be fixed with surgery.
6 – Dermatochalasis
Similar to Ptosis, Dermatochalasis is an excess of skin or fat around the eyelids which cause them to be permanently half-closed, or even fully closed. This also typically requires surgery to correct.
